About Maas Goote

For over 25 years my professional passion has been to design strategies, lead and strengthen organisations, solve problems,negotiate agreements and bridge opposing interests - all with a view to contributing to environmental protection, from the global to the local level.

My work has ranged from high level political processes with ministers and Heads of State to action on the ground in the ecological frontlines. From being a lead negotiator to leading a conservation NGO. From successfully chairing UN negotiations to being CEO of a philanthropic fund financing local organisations working on ecosystem restoration.

As legal counsel, negotiator, Chair, Board member and CEO, I have been intimately involved in a broad set of environmental issues, including biodiversity, climate change, forest restoration, ozon protection.

This includes:

  • International Lawyer and Legal Counsel;

  • EU Lead Negotiator in UN Climate Talks;

  • Head of NL Delegations to a wide array of environmental treaties;

  • Chair in several UN environmental treaty regimes, responsible for leading negotiations on new environmental agreements;

  • Executive Director of international conservation NGO, setting strategy and guiding the implementation of complex landscape programmes (www.iucn.nl); 

  • CEO of philanthropic foundation responsible for setting strategy and developing a broad portfolio of partners and innovative projects, in the frontlines of conservation, ecological restoration, science and climate resilience (www.dobecology.nl);
